Step 3 — Determine the wires for the disconnector
The switch will have three or four wires depending on the voltage of the circuit to which you connect the alternating current disconnector. If the chain is a 110 volt circuit, use an alternating current disconnector with three wires. There will be a neutral white wire, green grounding wire (which can also be copper) and black (or red) wire. If the circuit is 220-volt, the disconnector that you will use will have four wires (additional hot or red wire).
